SCRAMBLE CALF DIVISION

Arrival Time - Friday, March 28th – 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Judging Date – Sunday, March 30th, 8:00 a.m.
Check-out – Sunday, March 30th, by 6:00 p.m.

1. This division is subject to the General Rules and these Division rules.

2. Open to all 4-H and FFA members that are enrolled in public, private, parochial schools or Home Educated Students. Even if an exhibitor has been through the program once, they are eligible to participate in the program again, but only after they have sat out of the program for the year following their participation. They would then be placed at the bottom of the list giving exhibitors who have not participated in the program an opportunity to do so.

3. Participants must have reached their 12 th, but not their 18 th birthday on January 1, 2008, and not be enrolled beyond their Junior year in high school. Participants must weigh at least 100 pounds. Selection of Calf Scramble participants will be done through the 4-H and FFA.

4. The breed categories will consist of:
a. Brahman
b. English
c. Exotic

5. With regard to Calf Scramble Show placement:
a. Belt buckles will be given to Grand and Reserve Champion of Show
b. Rosettes will be given to Grand and Reserve Champion of Breeds
c. All others will receive ribbons

6. There will be no entry fee or entry cards due for the Scramble Calf Show, however, entry cards are due and a $20.00 entry fee will be charged if you wish to enter the Breeding Beef Show and a $20.00 entry fee for the Replacement Heifer Show. Scramble calves may participate in the Replacement Heifer Show & Sale but will have to tag in on October 2 nd . ENTRIES ARE DUE NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 29, 2008 BY 5:00 P.M.

7. All Breeding Stock must be double-tied.

8. No bedding hay.

9. The following scholarship money will be given:

a. $3,000.00 for First Place overall;
b. $2,000.00 for Second Place overall; and
c. $1,000.00 for Third Place overall

Exhibitors will be judged to determine overall placement as follows: 20% - Calf Placement in Show; 20% - Presentation of Heifer and Personal Interview and 60% - Essays and Monthly Reports. The overall placement may be determined by the following weighted factors, including but not limited to: Completeness, Neatness, Accuracy, Timeliness and Comments of Monthly Progress Reports, Photographs; Sportsmanship; Presentation of Heifer and Personal Interview; Calf Scramble Show; Essays; Scrapbook; and Showmanship. The scholarship money will be funded directly to the college, University or institution of higher learning of the exhibitor’s choice upon satisfactory proof of enrollment. Scholarship must be used within one year from date of graduation of high school.

10. Once each month, the exhibitor will be required to make a progress report on their animal. The reports are checked late if they arrive at the Fair Office after the 10 th of each month. They are due by 5:00 p.m. No faxes will be accepted. Should the 10 th fall on a Saturday or Sunday, the reports will be due the following Monday. Monthly progress reports must be submitted to the Montgomery County Fair Association Office, the sponsors, and the exhibitors CEA or VAT. By February 2, 2009, by 5:00 p.m., exhibitors must submit a 1500 word essay on “MY BEEF CALF SCRAMBLE PROJECT” and a 500 word essay on “WHY I SELECTED A (BREED) FOR MY SCRAMBLE PROJECT.”

11. Heifers MUST BE PURCHASED BY EXHIBITORS NO LATER THAN SEPTEMBER 1 ST, following the 2008 Show. Payment on scramble certificates will not be made to the seller until transferred Registration Certificate and health papers, properly completed by a licensed veterinarian, and received in the Fair Office. Registration certificates must be transferred and/or recorded in the exhibitor’s name on or before November 1, 2008.

12. Heifer must be purebred and registered in the Association records of one of the following breeds: ARB, ORB, Beefmaster, Brahman, Brangus, Red Brangus, Santa Gertrudis, Simbrah, Angus, Hereford/Polled Hereford, Red Angus, Shorthorn, Charolais, Limousin, Maine Anjou and Simmental.

13. Calves must have been born between JANUARY 1, 2007 and MARCH 31, 2008, except HEREFORD, POLLED HEREFORD AND SHORTHORN, which must have been born between MARCH 1, 2007 AND MARCH 31, 2008.

14. Should any participant in the Calf Scramble fail to catch a calf because of unusual or extenuating circumstances and is then awarded a heifer by some member of the audience or hard luck sponsor, said participant will participate in all events offered to the scramble exhibitors. The exhibitor must care for the heifer under the Calf Scramble Rules and the donor will become a Calf Scramble Sponsor.

15. Exhibitors MUST exhibit their heifer at the 2009 Montgomery County Fair. The original registration papers will be mailed approximately two weeks after the heifers have been shown. Failure of an exhibitor to participate and exhibit their heifer at the 2009 Montgomery County Fair shall result in the exhibitor being required to refund all scramble certificate monies to the Montgomery County Fair Association; the original registration papers will not be mailed to the exhibitor until said monies have been refunded to the Montgomery County Fair Association, and the above is hereby acknowledged and agreed to by the exhibitor as a condition of participating in the calf scramble program, and/or may forfeit all rights and privileges to enter, participate and/or exhibit in the future at the Montgomery County Fair.

16. Sponsors are obtained for the exhibitors and a purchase certificate not to exceed $1,000 will be made out to the seller of the calf. Scramble exhibitors who complete all phases of their project to the satisfaction of the Committee Leadership and the Fair Association will be awarded $250.00 at the completion of all Fair activities to help cover the cost of expenses, and as a reward for a job well done.

17. A MEETING WILL BE SCHEDULED IN MAY IN ORDER TO PICK UP CALF SCRAMBLE CERTIFICATES. A thank you note to the sponsor MUST be turned in at this time and payment will be due also at this time for (2) scramble pictures. The Fair Office will mail the thank you note along with one picture to the sponsor.
